From “Nomadland” to “Birdman,” Searchlight Pictures always finds itself in the midst of the awards race, and the independent studio may have just gotten another ticket to the Oscars with…Inisherin from Inisherin. Martin McDonagh’s grim comic tale debuted on Monday at Venice Film Festival, where I got a standing ovation for 13 minutes. This is the longest and highest reception of any Lido movie premiering this season, at least based on the somewhat unscientific applause scale.
McDonna and stars Colin FarrellBrendan Gleeson and Keri Condon hugged each other throughout the standing ovation and walked from the mezzanine to the orchestra. To be fair, the applause may have been unfairly replaced. That’s because Farrell broke tradition by wading into the crowd to take selfies with fans and autographs, which made the cheer grow louder and more sustainable. At one point, MacDonna’s partner, actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, leaned back in her chair and kissed her boyfriend while he basked in cuddles. The love for “The Banshees of Inisherin” was so intense that the crowd stood on its feet so passionately that the movie’s big moment began to appear on the red carpet for Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling. Guides in Venice had to hurry to try to persuade the audience to leave the theater so that the premiere of the next film could begin.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” doesn’t just look like a confirmed Best Picture nominee, but Farrell could earn his first Best Actor nomination of his career, and Gleeson and Condon could be strong in supporting the nominees and the actress. The film tells the unexpected story of two best friends (Pharrell and Gleeson) who suddenly end their friendship, a solution that has a seismic impact on the rural community in which they live.
Critics loved the photo with diverseInn Guy pays tribute to the “Inisherin Fathers” as “a wonderful film with a deeply sad, frightened, and sometimes grotesquely melancholy film.” He also gained fame for McDonagh’s script and direction, as well as for his skilful handling of performers.
Venice has hosted a number of films this year that will likely compete with “The Banshees of Inisherin” for the Love Awards, including Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” win rave Starring Brendan Fraser, Todd Fields Drama with Cate Blanchett Mark the director’s first feature At 16 years old.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” brings McDonagh together with both Gleeson and Farrell. The three previously worked together on 2008’s “In Bruges.” McDonagh recently directed 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” another Searchlight version that has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won two for performances by Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” opens in theaters on October 21.
