College football scores, rankings, highlights: Clemson, USC beat slow starts to remain undefeated

Although Week 6 was a rare Saturday when the top 10 teams didn’t lose, it wasn’t easy for the country’s top teams as surprises were thwarted by some of the favorite teams across the country. Among those who survived wins after some early trouble were No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 USC with all three teams remaining undefeated ahead of next week’s big conference games.

Clemson found himself trapped in a 3-3 draw with struggling Boston College for nearly the entirety of the second quarter before Tiger finally scored the game’s first touchdown in the last minute of the first half en route to a 31-3 win. Although the Tigers dominated defensively, it was clear even in their 28-point victory that attacking was still a work in progress; Clemson totaled 364 yards and chased seven times. The Tigers travel to Florida next week.

Similarly, the University of Southern California held Washington State away from its 30-14 home win largely due to its defense. The Trojans squandered an early 10-0 lead by allowing back-to-back drops in the second quarter. From there, they shrank, keeping Washington State scoreless on its next eight holdings to close out the game. Travis Day led the way offensively with a 149-yard dash and landing on 28 carrying Trojans, who travel to face Utah No. 11 next week. Utes lost 42-32 at UCLA on Saturday but may still present USC with their toughest test yet.

Out of the top ten, North Carolina State beat out quarterback Devin Leary’s loss to outlast the feisty Florida State team 19-17. Wolfbeck beat the Seminoles 16-0 in the second half with Leary on the sideline with his arm in a sling.
