Hugh Jackman admits getting back in shape after Wolverine got ‘a lot harder’ in ‘Deadpool 3’

Hugh Jackman, who last played Wolverine in 2017’s “Logan,” is finding it very difficult to get back into shape as the character for the upcoming “Deadpool 3.”

Jackman, 54, was recently a guest on the The Empire Movie Podcast (via Comicbook), and he was asked if his training of Wolverine had been made easier given his hectic schedule.

“No, a lot harder,” Jackman said. “I do eight shows a week now, so I only lift weights three times a week. But I’ll get into it once or twice a day once I’m done in a month. And I’ll have six months to prepare, and I always have the same approach every time I go.”

Jackman, who is currently starring in “The Music Man” on Broadway, added: “I want to be better than ever, in better shape than ever, and more able to do things than ever before. I just I get the added motivation of getting Ryan Reynolds out every single day.”

It makes sense considering that both Wolverine and Deadpool have no love for each other. “How do I rank it?” Jackman said of the on-screen dynamic between the characters audiences will see in Marvel Studios’ upcoming sequel.

Jackman added, “I’m only speaking from my point of view, [Logan’s] Frustrated by him, wanting to be a million miles away from him or wanting to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’d probably punch him in the head a lot.”

Jackman hooked his Wolverine cipher with “Logan,” which was made as a swan song as the character after his debut in 2000’s “X-Men.” The R-rated movie was a massive hit and even earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

With Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the “X-Men” library is slated for a reboot, but Reynolds’ Deadpool has been billed as the only character who will survive crossing into the carefully crafted Marvel Cinematic Universe (under Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige). Now, we have Jackman’s Wolverine to look forward to in “Deadpool 3,” which follows Patrick Stewart’s Professor X making a cameo in this year’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” – albeit a different Charles Xavier from a different universe.

Likewise, Jackman has promised that “Deadpool 3” won’t step on the toes of the ending established in “Logan” – the Wolverine we see in the “Deadpool” sequel is from an alternate timeline where he did not do death.

Deadpool 3, which will be directed by Shawn Levy, will be released on November 8, 2024.
