brought tuesday the sound Shown are the top 13 results, which determined the top 10 finishers of the season. At the start of the evening, host Carson Daly explained that nine contestants would be voted on, based on Monday’s top 13 performersafter which the four remaining singers will compete for the last place via instant sing-along and real-time audience audio.
On Monday, I had predicted that among the four finalists it would be Eric of Camilla’s team, who had greatly relaxed his usual stage presence, and as a result got lost in the shuffle; Gwen’s Alyssa Witrado, who really didn’t have to make it into the top 13 in the first place; and up-and-coming Team Gwen member Kiqué, who disappointingly played it safe and direct this week with a cute karaoke cover by Stevie Wonder. And I was right about all three.
However, she also assumed that Team Blake’s pop singer Rowan Grace, who she thought had fumbled her ABBA cover, would be in danger, too. But I should have factored in Blake Shelton’s rampant popularity among loyalists voiceviewers. Rowan survived – making Blake the only coach of the season to have all four direct qualifying semi-finalists make it into the top 10. If you’re doing the math, that means Blake’s cast is now 40% of Season 22. The guy is simply unstoppable – that is, until he stops himself and retires him the sound Next year. I’ll be curious to see how the show’s voting patterns change once Blake becomes unchanged in Season 24.
But … back to this is season. Season one contestant 22 did just that Not Worried about being in danger this week was Camilla’s alternative rocker Devix, who on Monday killed off an Arctic Monkeys song — a voice first! — and in the process, he has apparently established himself as the new frontrunner. John Legend told Devix that “RU Mine?” It was “the right song for who you are as an artist and singer”; Proud trainer Camila Cabello exclaimed, “I’m gone Superstar on this one!”; and even former and current DJ KROQ voice Host Carson Daly agreed, telling Davis, “Thank you for bringing back rock ‘n’ roll the sound – a sound and a feeling that we’ve been missing for a while! “
But it seems voice Viewers didn’t miss the rock band on this show – or at least they didn’t miss Britrock. Oh, okay. And here I was hoping Devix would cover Franz Ferdinand, The Cribs, Muse, or Kasabian banger next week.
But there was still hope that Devex might be around next week, and when it came time for him to sing for Save, he stuck to the genre he did best, with a rousing rendition of Anglophilic Killers’ “When I Was Young”. This performance was less dark, menacing, and a trampling on the night before’s number—it was anthemic, upbeat, gospel, and decidedly stadium-worthy—and it seemed all might not be lost.
“Listen, I don’t know what America was thinking when they didn’t vote for you yesterday,” Camilla grumbled. “America, you can redeem yourself now. extricate yourself! … America, you will be making a huge mistake if you let Devix go. Want to hear his voice on a song. You want to hear his voice in a really emotional song. you are doing Not Want to let that sound go! “
But Devix faced some stiff competition from Kiqué, another maverick in indie rock this season. “I would Not You want to make that call,” Carson admitted.
At least it seemed clear that America wouldn’t have to make a call between Eric and Alyssa. First, Eric sang… “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. Ugh. More like Eric Whymy princess? Eric is an accomplished showman, and ArtistAnd when he was absolutely gorgeous with pastel hair, the solo star of “The Eric Who Show,” he was a delight to behold. I’m not sure why he felt compelled to ditch the brand this week with his happy story choices and the fashion industry, but he really sabotaged himself. And I felt like he wasn’t out on his own terms. When Shivering sang “The Climb” to Miley “my faith is shaky,” it really sounded, and when he finished his song with “I love y’all,” he clearly knew “The Eric Who Show” was over. And that was a shame.
As for teen pop star Alyssa, Billie Eilish’s age-appropriate hit “Ocean Eyes” was actually one of her strongest performances—certainly better than Monday’s flaky, semi-blasphemous Selena cover—more vulnerable, relatable, and more so. It suits her soft voice. But it was still an undercooked and inconsistent performance, one that indicated she had better wait for the audition to the sound in a season or two.
Returning to the topic of redemption, Keke hoped for compensation for himself, because after performing some of the season’s left-most inventive performances (a radical rehash of OutKast’s Hey Ya! and Harry Styles’s As It Was), Monday fumbled and stumbled with a generic and old-fashioned performance. So, Kiké allowed it wailing in the weekend Fifty Shades of Grey “I earned it” theme – and he earned it, okay. This was 50 degrees of awesome – high self-confidence and sexy voice.
“Keke is clearly going through America. the correct? begged Gwen Stefani. “I want to remind everyone that this is a 19-year-old boy; he have manhuman voice. … I feel this is wrong, America. We have to push Cake forward.”
And so, after the commercial break and the five-minute voting window, America considered Camila and Gwen’s pleas and saved… Kiqué. I couldn’t argue with that decision, and I’m glad Kiqué got a reprieve. But Devix Start I was in the bottom four to begin with – not when he was just starting to break out of his shell and break the mold.
“Deviks, no matter what happens tonight, I think you’re a huge talent,” Camila assured the 28-year-old Rock Queen before his fate was known. “I want to hear your songs in my car. I just think you are a talented musician. You were supposed to do this. Thanks for being so vulnerable and open with me.”
Hopefully, this won’t be the last we hear from Devix. In the meantime, the top 10 will be competing next Monday, and hopefully Kiqué will learn from this week’s close call and get back to taking chances and flipping the script—or Kiqué-fying—some out-of-the-box song choices. I’ll see you later.
