A roof collapsed at Delhi airport after heavy rains, killing one person and injuring four others.

Videos circulating online showed huge pillars supporting the airport’s roof crashing into cars parked along Terminal 1 of the airport.

All departures from the terminal have been temporarily suspended and check-in desks have been closed.

Authorities said the incident occurred at 5 a.m. (23:30 GMT Thursday).

Rescue operations are underway at the airport, and the injured are being treated in hospitals.

India’s aviation regulator has advised airlines to accommodate passengers on alternative flights or offer them refunds.

Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced compensation of 2 million rupees ($24,000; £19,000) to the family of the deceased and 300,000 rupees to the injured.

He told reporters that the situation was under control and that inspections were underway to prevent any further incidents. He added that airports with additional facilities across the country would also be subject to inspections.

The incident was criticised on social media, with many users pointing out that the station had undergone a massive renovation costing billions of rupees and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March – a month before the last general election.

However, Mr. Kingarapu later said that the section that collapsed was not part of the renovated section.

Heavy rains have lashed Delhi since Thursday, providing a much-needed respite from the high temperatures the Indian capital has been witnessing since April.

However, this led to waterlogging and major traffic jams in the city.

Videos circulating on social media showed people wading in knee-deep water and cars and buses partially submerged in the subway.

Heavy rains also led to flight delays and cancellations.

The India Meteorological Department expects the city to continue to see “heavy to very heavy rain” over the weekend.
