Instagram is having issues this afternoon, with reports of user accounts being suspended.

According to DownDetector, the issues started around 13:08 GMT and are affecting users globally.

While the reason for the outage remains unclear, several users reported having their accounts suspended.

Other users are reporting missing followers, possibly due to suspended users being removed from follower counts.

Instagram tweeted: “We understand that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We are looking into the matter and apologize for the inconvenience.”

MailOnline contacted Meta, the company that owns Instagram, for more feedback.

So far, over 4,000 issues have been registered with DownDetector, while over 1,000 issues have been reported by users in the UK

Many users have taken to Twitter to discuss the issues they are facing.

One user wrote: “Okay, my account got banned for no reason, I couldn’t resume it and now my account is expired. & I’m not the only one.’

Another added, “My IG account has now been suspended! Lots of tweets suspended too! Help us Instagram!”

One joked: “Everyone checks in on Twitter when WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook crashes.”

Another West Virginia user said: “Has anyone else’s Instagram account been suspended for no reason? And now Instagram won’t bother letting you resume, it just gives you an error? ”

Meanwhile, a user based in Melbourne, Australia said: “Anyone else’s Instagram randomly crashes after 30 seconds of using the app?”

Instagram is one of several platforms owned by Meta, the company owned by Mark Zuckerberg, along with WhatsApp and Facebook.

Just last week, WhatsApp experienced a two-hour outage that left users globally unable to send or receive messages.

Best WhatsApp Alternatives

If you are considering deleting WhatsApp, you will be glad to hear that there are many alternative applications to choose from:

1. Telegram

With over 400 million users, Telegram is one of the most popular WhatsApp alternatives.

Although it is very similar to WhatsApp, what sets it apart is the fact that it gives the option to set messages to self-destruct after a certain period of time, without leaving any traces.

Telegram also offers end-to-end encryption.

However, as a WhatsApp spokesperson noted, Telegram “doesn’t offer end-to-end encryption by default, so it’s not necessarily more secure than WhatsApp.”

2. Signal

Signal is one of the most secure messaging apps out there, thanks to the fact that it is open source.

This means that the app’s icon is publicly available for viewing, making it nearly impossible for app creators to slip into any backdoors that might allow governments or hackers to spy on your messages.

3. iMessage

If you’re using an iPhone, you might consider simply switching to iMessage, Apple’s proprietary messaging app.

The app has a number of great features including no character limit, the ability to send photos and videos, and of course Apple’s animated emoji feature, Animoji.

Unfortunately, iMessage is only available for iPhone users, so you’ll have a hard time interacting with anyone who uses Android.

4. Google Messages

Google’s answer to iMessage is Google Messages, an Android-only messaging service.

The app replaces your standard SMS app, and integrates with all Google apps and services, making it easy to share photos or use the Google Assistant.

5. Facebook Messenger

If you’ve been put off using WhatsApp because it’s sharing data with Facebook, then Facebook Messenger might not be the best option for you.

However, the app offers a number of useful features, including games, secret chats, and video calls.
