Gunn announced plans for a new feature film about Superman, but said Cavill will not be returning
“Peter and I have our DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more than over the moon with; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects early in the new year,” Gunn tweeted Wednesday night.
“Superman is among those on the list. In the initial stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so Henry Cavill won’t be playing the character. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and talked about a number of exciting possibilities for us to work together in the future.” .
This news may come as a surprise to fans who were expecting to see the actor reprise his role. Cavill appeared in the mid-credits scene Black Adamand sharing a video on Instagram announcing that he will be back.
“I wanted to make it official — I’m back as Superman,” Cavill said in a video. added that Black Adam Cameo was a “very small bait” of things to come.
However, in a more recent post on Wednesday, the actor confirmed that he will not be returning in the new Superman project.
“It’s sad news for everyone. After all, I won’t be returning as Superman. It wasn’t the easiest news, but that’s life,” Cavill wrote, after asking the studio to announce my return in October, before they were hired. “I respect that James and Peter have a world to build. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes.”
