LG announced a 45-inch Ultra HD OLED gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate. The company calls the UltraGear 45GR95QE “the first curved OLED display with a refresh rate of 240Hz,” which is notable at a time when most OLED displays (including those with flat panels) are still limited to 120Hz. The company has yet to announce pricing or a release date for the monitor, but it plans to show it at IFA in Berlin next month.
Having a higher refresh rate means the screen feels smoother and less flickering, and video games feel more responsive to gameplay — especially when combined with OLED’s near-instant response times. Until recently, it was rare to find an OLED display with a refresh rate of over 120Hz, but that has changed in recent months. YouTube channel HDTVTest reported in May Samsung’s S95B QD-OLED TV became the first (albeit unofficially) OLED TV to support a 144Hz refresh rate, while Alienware AW3423DW Monitorwhich also uses a QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display, reaches 175Hz.
However, we are now seeing the advent of OLED screens of up to 240Hz. HDTVTest reported earlier this month that the MSI GE67 HX laptop features the world’s first 240Hz OLED display, and Razer also announced An OLED 240Hz laptop on its own. Only this week we saw too Corsair announces 240Hz OLED displayAlthough it can be manually folded into a curved screen, it stole some attention away from the high refresh rate.
Aside from refresh rate, other specifications of the UltraGear 45GR95QE include a 21:9 aspect ratio, 800R curvature, and the ability to display 98.5 of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It features a 1440p resolution, an HDMI 2.1 port with support for variable refresh rates, and an additional DisplayPort 1.4 connector. There are also built-in Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture modes for viewing content from multiple sources side by side.
While OLED panels’ refresh rates are improving, they still lag far behind LCD’s ability. LCD panels with 360Hz refresh rates are becoming increasingly popular, and earlier this year we saw Nvidia’s first 500Hz G-Sync gaming monitor announced by Asus.
