Selena Gomez co-stars with Steve Martin and Martin Short on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” — so it didn’t take an investigator to assume she’d appear during the duo’s stint hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
And so I did! The actress and singer appeared at the end of the pair’s opening monologue. The couple (as a joke!) toasted each other over feigned eulogies. “Marty Doesn’t Want to Burn – It’s Too Late!” Martin joked, for example.
Martin finished saying, “Now that Marty’s gone, who am I ever going to work with?”
“What about me?” Gomez said, surprising the audience with her cameo.
Martin and Short are certainly a dynamic duo, but they’ve recently become a fantastic trio with Gomez. Gomez also appeared in a late sketch impersonating Martin and the starring short “Father of the Bride,” alongside Kieran Culkin (who was, yes, in the original).

The second season of the series aired earlier this year; USA TODAY critic Kelly Lawler wrote of the season: “The combination of the talents of Martin, Short, and Gomez was an odd but welcome formula, and they’re still a charming trio in Season 2. Winter New York is still dull and dreary in the realm of ‘Only Murder’, but this beautifully harmonious show Fred has an uncanny ability to lift your spirits even when he’s dealing with death and chaos.”

However, the SNL alumni made a timely joke about their long-distance relationship earlier in the monologue.
“Steve, we’re like Harry and Meghan. Nobody’s rooting for us but you’ll keep watching anyway,” Short said, referring to the royal couple’s new Netflix series that turns heads at home and across the pond.

“Working with Marty Short is like the World Cup of football,” Martin later said. “Somehow, I just can’t get into it.”
They also said that they are currently working on the third season of “Murders in the Building Only”. Like Martin in the urinal, Short said, he flushes for 32 minutes.
