Maya Hawke is unfazed by the “Nebo Baby” rhetoric online.
In an interview with a British newspaper The Sunday TimesHawke did not hold back in admitting that being the daughter of Hollywood stars Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke played a role in her rise as an actress.
When Maya Hawke was asked if she thought she “deserved” her success, she said she was “comfortable” with the idea that she “didn’t deserve it.”
“‘Deserving’ is a complicated word,” the Stranger Things actor said. “There are a lot of people who deserve to have this kind of life but don’t, but I guess I’m comfortable knowing I don’t deserve it and I do it anyway.”
She continued, “And I know that not doing so will not help anyone.” “I saw two paths when I first started, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job, and go for open acting roles.”
Hook’s comments come nearly two years after the term “nepo baby” became the Internet’s favorite buzzword 2022 article from New York Magazine Which highlighted an extensive list of celebrities’ children who have successfully launched their careers in the industry.
Hawk was one of many children mentioned in the article.
The “Do Revenge” actress, who starred alongside her mother in the 2023 film “The Kill Room” and was directed by her father in the drama “Wildcat” the same year, shared why she agrees with the online criticism of the Nebo kids.
“It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air,” Hawke told The Sunday Times. “It’s a lucky place to be in. My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about that.

Elsewhere in her interview, Hawke also addressed previous comments she made detailing her audition process for Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” In a 2019 Hollywood Reporter story.
Tarantino is best known for working with Hawke’s mother on Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction.
“I got to audition for the project through normal channels through my agents,” Hawke told the outlet at the time. “I auditioned in my bedroom with my dad. We sent the tape to Quentin and I got a call.”
She told the Sunday Times that she was ridiculed for the remarks and explained that favoritism gave her an advantage in the exam.
“I was laughed at so hard for that clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I had auditioned,” she said, adding: “I never meant to insinuate that I didn’t get the role for reasons of favoritism – I just thought I did.”
