East Rutherford, NJ – New York Giants wide receiver Kenny Goladay He didn’t quite like coach Brian Dabol’s decision to play with him only twice in Sunday’s 19-16 win over the Carolina Panthers.
“Of course I don’t really agree with him. Or like me,” Goladay, who was speaking to the media for the first time since the match, said on Wednesday. “But I can only control what I can control, which is coming to work every day.”
Golladay, the giants free takeover in 2021, did not anticipate this. He said everyone in the organization told him he was a professional and did things the right way.
It makes all of this very confusing for Golladay.
“I have to play regardless,” he said. “This is a fact.”
Golladay, 28, was supposed to be the Giants’ No. 1 receiver when he was signed by the former regime in their last off-season. He signed a four-year deal worth $72 million and earned $18 million this season.
But Golladay had a difficult first year with the team as injury hampered him and he didn’t score a touchdown. He had a procedure that made it out this spring.
The banners were actually on the wall this summer when – despite his constant presence on the field – Guldai appeared to be affected by the string of injuries. Surprisingly, he was one of the few veterans to play in the pre-season finale, earning two passes for 22 yards in 42 shots (mostly between the Giants wide receivers) in the season-opening win over the Tennessee Titans.
Daboll said he told Golladay in the middle of last week that he was going with him David Sales in It against leopards. Sills entered the competition with two career cuts for 17 yards. He earns $825,000 this season.
Golladay has 222 receptions for 3,611 yards and 21 touchdowns. He led all receivers in 2019 with a score of 11. But it makes no sense to think that he lost a step. Golladay has had two touchdown receptions and less than 900 yards in the two seasons he’s been on since.
The veteran receiver was asked to request a change of scenery after sitting on the bench for most of Sunday’s games.
“We’ll see how it goes. Yes, we’ll see how it goes,” said Goladay. “I came here to play. I’m sure they also pay me to play. I think they want to see more or get something on their end. I just do what I have to do as much as I start each day.”
It seems unlikely that Golladay will be transferred at this point, due in part to the lack of production and his contract. He still owes $11.6 million in base salary for the remainder of this season and another $4.5 million next year.
Not a problem keeping it for now. Daboll and several Giants players told ESPN that he handled the matter like a pro.
It’s what it is. It’s work, said Golday. “I’m not here to be friends with the coaches. They are just co-workers to me.”
Daboll has been consistent in saying that the wide receiver position is open competition, and it means business. Ritchie James Leading the Giants with 10 catching and receiving 110 yards.
James was an unofficial acquisition that many thought was on the shortlist. Sells made his way into the team.
Daboll has used the same line about competition from the start. He took a similar stance when Golladay was one of the few veterans to play in his third and final pre-season game. It was also the reason why he was chosen for the first round last year, Kadarius TonyHe played only seven shots in the opening game and Gulday barely made it onto the field against the Panthers.
“It’s a constant competition for receiver. You’ve said it since then? I’m not an idiot, you’ve said it since mid-camp, right?” Daboll said on Sunday. “It hasn’t changed. It will be an ongoing competition.”
He added on Monday: “Again, whether it’s the highest-paid player, the lowest-earning player, the highest-choice player, or a non-certified free agent — we’re going to go in there and let the players compete. A week doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what’s going to happen next week.” I think everyone understands what we’re trying to do as an organization in terms of continuing to improve, competing for positions, and working as hard as possible.”
Daboll doesn’t play favorites based on salary or draft status, and he has caught his team’s attention.
“It’s a rare occurrence, but the coach always told us he doesn’t care where your draft was put in the first round, the second round, no wording. It’s about what he’s talking about,” sterling shepherd He said.
Shepard has played the most shots (102) from any wide receiver for the Giants so far this season. He comes out of the Achilles rupture he suffered last season. Sells is in second place with a score of 91.
If Golladay has a role this season, it will have to be earned, not awarded based on his past accomplishments. This new system is not tied to Golladay, who was the Lions’ pick for the third round in 2017.
Goladay was upbeat about the way Wednesday’s workouts went. He said he thinks his role this week will probably be a little different.
The Giants (2-0) may need him more Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Tony did not participate in Wednesday’s training due to a persistent hamstring injury.
