The giants They’ve been to London three times and all three times, they’ve scored a victory and it’s probably safe to say that their last win was also the most unlikely one.
On paper, it doesn’t look like the Giants will have much opportunity to beat Packers Sunday, but the Giants apparently didn’t read the newspaper. In front of a raucous crowd at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Giants managed a 27-22 win in a match no one thought they could win. Not only did they go into Week 5 with an advanced midfielder (Daniel Jones), but they were also missing out on several key receivers.
And to be honest, it was actually worse than that. Here’s what the Giants have been dealing with this week:
With his attacking options limited, Giants coach Brian Daboll decided to throw the Packers kitchen sink: he devised a game plan with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka that kept the Attacking Giants one step ahead of the Packers defense for nearly the entire game.
The Giants saved their unique plays of the red zone. The game’s first touchdown for New York came at 2 yards from Daniel Bellinger which was more exciting than his standard 2 yard run.
That result came in the second quarter and cut the Packers’ lead to 17-10.
In the second half, the Giants were better in attack, scoring in each of their first three possessions. The main reason they were able to do this was because of Saquon Barclay’s play. After leaving the game briefly in the third quarter with a shoulder injury, Barkley returned to the field to take out the two biggest games of the game for New York.
The first came on a short cross from Jones that Barkley managed to convert into a 41-yard gain.
Four plays after that, Barkley lined up the Wildcat formation in a play where he ended up in the end zone for what ended up being a game-winning relegation.
Barkley carried the ball 13 times for 70 yards on a day he hit the Packers defense with 5.38 yards per lunge.
Although Barkley was great, you could argue that the top attacking giant was Jones, who hammered out the clutch for his team despite playing on a lame ankle. Jones was almost perfect, going in 21 of 27 for 217 yards. He also rushed for 37 yards, which probably surprised the Packers, who didn’t really look like they were expecting to be able to run because of his injured ankle. One big play from Jones came in the third quarter from 3rd and 3rd when he kept his drive alive by running 4 yards in a QB tie.
The Giants are now 4-1 on the season for the first time since 2009 and there is no reason to believe they can’t go on winning. Not only have they proven that they can play with the big boys on Sunday, they have proven themselves to be one of the big boys by beating the Packers.
The Giants may also want to start volunteering to play in London more often. They are now perfect in England and have played in the knockout stages every year they have played abroad.
