Point Center issues power outage map after Hurricane Beryl

CenterPoint Energy, the city’s primary electricity provider, released an interactive map Tuesday evening giving some insight into Hurricane Beryl’s impact on Houston.

The map’s appearance comes weeks ahead of its highly anticipated arrival — CenterPoint spokesman Paul Locke said Tuesday that the map will be completed “in the next few weeks” and likely won’t be useful in tracking Brill’s restoration efforts.

The energy company has been unable to provide a map to track power outages since it took it down during a deadly derecho storm in May, which left more than a million customers without power. Officials said the map was “overloaded” by a large number of visitors to the company’s website in May, causing “technical difficulties,” such as incorrectly indicating that some areas had power when they remained dark.

CenterPoint is responsible for systems that provide power to approximately 2.8 million customers in the Houston area. When Hurricane Beryl hit the Houston area early Monday morning, it left nearly 80 percent of its customer base, or 2.2 million customers, without power.

Neighborhood-level data outages have been a source of frustration for many CenterPoint customers, both in May and in the wake of Hurricane Beryl, as residents seek answers about which areas were hardest hit and when their power would be restored.

In the absence of an official map of power outages after Hurricane Beryl, frustrated Houstonians instead turned to the Whataburger app as a proxy for power outages across the region. The official map released Tuesday by CenterPoint divides service areas into three categories: areas with power, areas designated for repair and areas still being evaluated by the company. The map also shows the number of customers who lost power in each zip code.

The map does not indicate when residents can expect power to be restored, though officials have promised that a new tool will provide “the same level of outage information and functionality” as the previous map.

This feature may be introduced in the coming days.

“As CenterPoint completes its damage assessment in the coming days, it will provide more detailed information on the timing of expected restoration,” the company said in a statement.

By 8 p.m. Tuesday, CenterPoint said in a statement that it had restored power to 850,000 customers, though its website says only 675,000 customers had power restored. The company expects that number to reach 1 million by the end of Wednesday, but has yet to provide an estimate for the remaining residents and businesses.

“It will take days,” Luke said. “I can’t give you a timetable, but it won’t happen tomorrow.”
