The thousandth Pokemon has finally been revealed

Finally, Game Freak has done it. As of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, there are now over 1,000 Pokémon.

Pokémon Sword and Shield, along with their DLC, bring the total to 905, and the Scarlet and Violet add-ons set the number at 1008. It counts new regional evolutions, assuming they have different names than their counterparts elsewhere.

So who is the 1,000th Pokemon? Turns out, Game Freak seems to have been very Realizing they were designing a monster with the distinct honor of being 1,000th, so they leaned on that a bit.

Warning: We’re going to spoil the 1,000 Pokemon number for you below this video. Don’t scroll further if you don’t want to know.

Who are these 1,000 Pokemon? It’s… Gholdengo!

Well, it’s like a grain amulet. But hear us out. Gholdengo is an adorable little guy, and a fun choice for the Pokémon 1000. He evolved from Gimmighoul, a ghost Pokémon that haunts treasure chests and can be found pulling mimicry-style pranks on unsuspecting trainers across Paldea. When defeated or captured, Gimmighoul drops Gimmighoul Coins, which can also be found on your travels through the area. You need 1000 of these Gimmighoul Coins before Gimmighoul can evolve into Gholdengo in the next level up. It’s a clear nod to Gholdengo’s status as the thousandth Pokemon.

Gholdengo’s Pokedex entry is also a testament to this amazing little guy that Game Freak loves. In scarlet, at least, it reads:

His body seemed to be made up of 1,000 coins. This Pokémon gets along well with others and is quick to make friends with anyone.

Moreover, the cover of his Pokedex entry is amazing: it shows him surfing on a skateboard made of coins.

We’re big Gholdengo fans here. Congratulations, Gholdengo, for being your 1000th Pokemon. I can’t wait to see what Game Freak does for your 2000th! [Editor’s Note: Pokemon 2000… I liked that movie – Kat Bailey].
