Surveys looking for space explosions in October 2022 are starting to explode like frogs in socks.
the case? The largest known gamma radiation burst was emitted by an object located 2.4 billion light-years away.
The event, known as GRB 221009A, was so powerful that it shook Earth's outer atmosphere. An unprecedented 18 TeV was recorded.
Science Alert It was later discovered that this event, also known as The Boat (the brightest ever), was the catastrophic demise of a massive star that gave rise to a black hole.
Details of this explosion have now been revealed through a new examination of advanced light.
The latest results suggest that, surprisingly, the boat was completely ordinary – something we did not expect – despite the strength of the gamma rays.
“It's no brighter than previous supernovas,” says astrophysicist Peter Blanchard of Northwestern University in the US.
“It seems fairly normal in the context of other supernovae associated with less energetic gamma-ray bursts [GRBs]. You might expect that the same collapsing star that produces very active and bright GRBs would also produce an extremely active and bright supernova.
“But it turns out that this is not the case,” he said. “We have very luminous GRBs, but they are a normal supernova.”
