George Berkowitz, who founded the seafood restaurant chain Legal Sea Foods, has died in a Boston suburb. He was 97 years old. Berkowitz died in his sleep on February 20 at his community retirement home in Dedham after suffering poor health, the Boston Globe reported. He originally founded Legal Sea Foods in 1950 as a fish market next to his Russian immigrant father’s meat and grocery market, Cash Market, in Cambridge, according to the newspaper. Over the years, restaurants, serving traditional New England seafood like clam chowder and fried oysters, have won a host of national awards. Roger Berkowitz, Berkowitz’s son, took over as CEO and sold the chain to Medford-based PPX Hospitality Brands. In 2020, although it retains its rights to the online market operation, there are currently 23 legal seafood restaurants from Massachusetts to Virginia. Born in Cambridge, Berkowitz also served in the United States Marine Corps. He left a wife, three sons, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family said in an obituary that funeral services for Berkowitz would be private.
