Chiefs Free Agency 2023: Offensive lineman Nick Allegretti has re-signed

according to Site friend Herbie Teope from Kansas City StarThe Kansas City Chiefs re-signed inside offensive lineman Nick Allegretti.

Selected from the University of Illinois in the seventh round (216th overall) of 2019 NFL DraftAllegretti can back up Creed Humphrey at center, along with Joe Thuney and Trey Smith at right and left guard positions. For Kansas City head coach Andy Reid (and offensive line coach Andy Heck), this makes him a valuable offensive player.

We don’t yet have the full details of Allegretti’s new contract – but since he’s just finalized his rookie contract (and we know it’s a one-year deal), he’ll be a prime candidate for the player-eligible version of the four-year Veteran Salary Benefit (VSB) contract.

As Jared Sapp noted in his recent piece about these kinds of deals — which general manager Bret Veitch uses frequently — the Chiefs gave such a deal to back up offensive lineman Andrew Wiley in 2022, allowing the team to pay him $2.5 million, but he only has one. $1.2 million was charged to the salary cap.

That’s just the kind of move Kansas City would have made for a player who appeared in 57 games (starting 12 of them) in his four-year NFL career.

Unless wide receiver Mecole Hardman is also re-signed, this would make Allegretti—the last player selected in 2019—the only member of that draft class to remain on the team. The others were safety Juan Thornhill, defensive tackle Kalin Saunders, linebacker Darwin Thompson and Rashad Fenton.
