Teenage son of Iowa State basketball coach Fran McCaffrey dies in crash that kills National Guard soldier
Iowa City police have cited 16-year-old Jonathan Jack McCaffrey for being the driver who struck Iowa National Guard soldier Corey Height, KCRG reports. Police said they responded to the crash around 4:16 p.m. on May 22 at Melrose Avenue and Kennedy Parkway. The driver was later identified as McCaffrey, 16, of North Liberty, who Jack goes to and is the son of Iowa State basketball coach Fran McCaffery. The younger McCaffrey was cited for failing to yield to a walker in a crosswalk.
Fran McCaffrey issued the following statement on Wednesday:
“On May 22, just after leaving school, our 16-year-old son was the driver in a car/pedestrian accident. Investigators told us it was an unavoidable accident and there is no evidence to suggest distracted driving. The pedestrian, who was on the run at the time of the accident, , the driver of another car waved in front of our passing son’s car, and Runner Sergeant Corey Height died two weeks after the accident from his injuries.
“We are devastated by this tragedy. The SFC Hite family has our deepest sympathies. While our family continues to process the events of the past weeks and help our son come to terms with this incident, we will have no further comment at this time.”
