Heidi Gardner explains the fight that happened on “SNL” last Saturday

Saturday Night LiveCast member Heidi Gardner said she tried hard not to break out of character during the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch that went viral last weekend, but seeing fellow cast member Mikey Day in full Butt-Head mode was too much.

“They were dressed in pre-rehearsal costumes on Saturday with their wigs and clothes but not the prosthetics,” Gardner told Vulture about Day and Ryan Gosling, who played Beavis. “Rehearsal was when the prosthetics first came out – the nose and mouth. I didn’t know about Mickey’s exposed gums and teeth.

“When I looked up and saw Mickey in rehearsal, I lost my mind,” she continued. “I was shocked. I think about it now and laugh. I recovered and tried to tell myself between the dress and the live show: 'You can never laugh like that again.'

But she couldn't contain herself and broke character again (with Gosling). “Mickey seems to be turning his head a little bit and gouging out his eyes,” she said. “It was like he was making a hidden confession. That was new….There was something about the way he was moving live on TV, like when someone is messing with you to make you laugh.”

In the sketch, Gardner played a NewsNation journalist holding a town hall meeting about artificial intelligence, with Kenan Thompson playing her guest, an MIT professor. When the pair discussed artificial intelligence, Thompson's character was distracted by an audience member who looked strikingly similar to Beavis, the cartoon character created and voiced by Mike Judge.

“There is a gentleman among your audience who bears a striking resemblance to Beavis in the cartoon Beavis and Butt-Headsaid Thompson's character. After Gosling's butt-head was moved to another seat, Thompson remarked to Gardner, “Now there's a gentleman behind you who looks like Butt-Head,” prompting Gardner to turn around and get the full butt-head treatment.
