PlayStation VR2 enjoyed a strong launch despite reports, outsold the original PSVR

PlayStation VR2 is off to a stronger start than previous reports indicated, as Sony revealed that the virtual reality headset has a better launch than the original PSVR.

subscribed to Job offerSony revealed that the first six weeks of PSVR 2 outperformed the first six weeks of the original PSVR, reaching just under 600,000 units sold. The exact numbers are not clear in the graph provided (below), but the original PSVR approached 500,000.

Sony also described the period as a “strong launch for the PlayStation VR2”, contradicting a report in March that said the console was expected to sell just 270,000 units in roughly the same six-week period. An industry analyst said Sony would need to lower the price of the PSVR 2 to avoid a “total disaster”.

The headset launched on February 22 with 42 games, including the main title Horizon: Call of the Mountain and a variety of VR updates for critically acclaimed games like Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil Village.

Sony announced another batch of games in the first PlayStation State of Play of 2023, including sci-fi western The Foglands, arcade shooter Synapse, and more. A major PlayStation showcase is happening later today, however, promising more AAA ads for the headset.

In our 9/10 review, IGN said: “With first-class visual quality and immersive sensory consoles, PlayStation VR2 marks a quantum leap over its predecessor, setting a new standard for virtual reality gaming.”
