Officials expect traffic leaving Boston’s Logan Airport to see more disruptions in the coming days and weeks amid the closure of the Sumner Tunnel leading into the city. “Last week wasn’t a real test of what to expect over the next seven weeks because a lot of people were on vacation last week,” said Ed Freeney, Massport’s director of aviation. We’re seeing traffic come back up,” Freeney said. “We’re now in the Ted Williams tunnel back up to the airport.” At points on Monday, the traffic delays were so long they caused congestion. within the airport roads, which is something Masport and the state police are looking to avoid.“We have to start diverting traffic to and from the airport so we can eliminate the congestion that goes back to the terminal,” said Phryne.“We’re seeing it more than we did last week.” In order for the airport to clear road traffic so people can enter and exit the terminals, they are temporarily blocking access from the airport to the tunnel ramp entrance. “We closed the Ted Williams entrance in the terminal building and divert that traffic to the north so we can free up traffic around the stations to make them safe and so people can access them.” “Sometimes it takes 15 or 20 minutes, and then we let the traffic back to Ted Williams,” Freeney said. Monday was the worst delays they’ve seen at the airport since the closure of the Sumner Tunnel, Phryne says. “We saw traffic like this on Sunday,” Phryne said. “Traffic is much busier today, but it may also have something to do with the weather.” Freni suggests that travelers be patient and allow extra travel time. “We recommend two hours because we think, at some point, people are going to go away,” said Phryne.
