The painting was commissioned in 2021 by the Cambridgeshire Royal Picture Trust, according to Fitzwilliam Museum. The museum noted in a statement that Koureth included Cambridge itself in the image, choosing background tones and a hexagonal architectural ornament inspired by buildings around the city. The area is the namesake for the couple’s surnames, which Queen Elizabeth II gave them on their wedding day in 2011.

The painting will be shown at Fitzwilliam for three years and then loaned to the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2023 to celebrate the reopening of that institution.

“I wanted to show their royal highnesses in a way that shows relaxation and friendliness, as well as elegance and reverence,” Koreith said in the statement.

“Because it is the first painting to depict them together, and specifically during their time as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I wanted the picture to evoke a sense of balance between their public and private lives. The piece was commissioned as a gift to the people of Cambridgeshire, and I hope they enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
