The Steelers in the first round named Kenny Pickett listed as QB 3rd on the depth chart

Pittsburgh Steelers They released their first official depth chart on Friday, and fans hoping to see rookie Kenny Beckett take over may immediately be disappointed. Beckett is listed as the team’s third quarterback, behind both current starter Mitchell Trubesky and backup Mason Rudolph.

Perhaps that shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Trubisky, who signed the team to a Two-year deal At the offseason, he was expected to open the season as a starter for the team. Although the team drafted Beckett in the first round, they received reps from the third series during bootcamp.

The biggest shocker was that Rudolph remained at No. 2 on the team depth chart. Rudolph, who was selected by the team in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, was unimpressed by his limited time in the NFL. In 10 starts, he threw 16 touchdowns for 10 interceptions. The Steelers could have turned things around for Rudolph after Ben Roethlisberger retired, but the team chose to bring in Trubisky and spend the first-round pick on another midfielder.

Putting Beckett on the depth chart may be a disappointment to some, but the early depth charts don’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. It’s still very early during training camp, and players are prone to slightly ups and downs once matches start.

Putting Beckett third on the depth chart is not an indication that the Steelers think he’s bankrupt. He probably talks more about his inexperience in the NFL than Trobisky and Rudolph.

It’s unlikely that Beckett will remain in third place on the depth chart for long. The Rudolph List site may not be secure given that the Steelers looked like they would be up against the competition during the holiday season. If he struggles during pre-season, Rudolph could be cut down, or at least demoted to third on the depth chart.

Trubisky seems likely to open the season as a start, but he may not keep that job. Trubisky has set solid numbers over the course of his NFL career, making 64 touchdowns to 38 interceptions, but his performance left a lot to be desired. Despite those numbers, Trubisky didn’t get a chance to start last season, instead opting to support Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

There is a scenario in which Trubisky rises to the level of his #2 public draft and turns into a stellar year with the Steelers. However, Trubisky is more likely to put the average over the average numbers, and the team eventually turns to Pickett.

Beckett’s placement in the team’s first official depth chart probably doesn’t change that schedule. He will eventually get his chance. That won’t change because he was listed as the team’s third quarterback on the depth chart in early August.
