Netflix has officially renewed The Witcher for a fifth and final season as filming on Season 4 of the hit fantasy drama begins.
Netflix's renewal announcement coincided with the news that the fourth (and now penultimate) season of The Witcher has entered production in the UK. Photos from the recent table read give fans a sneak peek at new and returning cast members, including Liam Hemsworth, who takes on the role of Geralt of Rivia.
One photo shows Laurence Fishburne, another season 4 newcomer, reading lines for fan-favorite character Regis, officially Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, a practicing physician and gentleman who becomes fast friends with the Witcher after their first meeting. But he also hides a dark secret.
The Witcher received a renewal for a fourth season in October 2022, but Netflix has only given the green light for a fifth season now. The two seasons will be filmed back-to-back and will adapt the remainder of Andrzej Sapkowski's books, Baptism of Fire, The Swallow Tower, and Our Lady of the Lake, to complete the television adaptation.
“It is with great pride that we begin filming the penultimate season of The Witcher with an excellent cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” said showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. “We're thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski's books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn't be our show if we didn't push our family of characters to the limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
According to the official log, Season 4 will pick up after the shocking events of Chapter 3, which saw Henry Cavill engage in a final battle as Geralt before Hemsworth steps in to join Yennefer and Ciri, who “face traversing the war-ravaged continent and its many demons separated from one another.”
The Witcher executive producers Steve Gaub and Tomek Baginski previously teased Season 4 after Hemsworth moved on to Geralt after Cavill left the show. The actor will also be in good company alongside series mainstays Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Joey Batey as Jaskier.
There's no word on when Season 4 will hit screens yet, but we're one step closer to finding out now that the cameras have started rolling.
