US senators said the attack that began in Ukraine is in line with intelligence reports they have received about what to expect from a Russian invasion.
In a series of tweets, Senator Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Russia was launching a “large-scale and all-out military offensive across Ukraine”.
Rubio said the attack included “air and amphibious landings, missile strikes from air, land and sea forces, cyber and cyber attacks, and a large land force to occupy a large area of territory.”
He added that the Russian airborne forces are also working to “control the airport in Kiev (so) they can fly troops to occupy the capital.” A source familiar with the matter said the tweets were based on US intelligence. Shared with members of the Intelligence Committee.
Congress briefed on the attack: As the Russian attack escalated late Wednesday, Senator Mark Warner, the Senate intelligence chief, and Representative Adam Schiff, the House Intelligence Committee chairman, spoke with CIA Director William Burns, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Senator Ben Cardin, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN that senators will be briefed on the invasion by the White House on Thursday.
“A lot of what we’re seeing happening in terms of apparent air attacks on Ukraine’s defense infrastructure is part of what we’ve been expecting,” Cardin said. There is no justification for that. I can tell you that there will be strong bipartisan support in the United States Senate and Congress for the strongest possible response from the United States and our allies.”
