Slovis, who played for Pitt last year, is one of the most successful quarterbacks on the NCAA team, throwing for 9,973 yards over four seasons. He will compete to win the starting job at BYU for the program’s first season in the Big 12, which BYU joins after becoming an independent since 2011. Slovis has one year of eligibility remaining.
In his three seasons at USC, Slovis has completed 70% of his passes. His best season there came in 2019 when he won Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year. He threw 30 touchdown passes and nine interceptions that season while completing 71.9% of his passes.
Sources tell ESPN that level of subtlety appealed to the BYU staff, who developed both Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall in NFL prospects. BYU has averaged over 31 points per game in the past three seasons as coach Kalani Setaki has leaned back into the program’s wide-open-passing roots.
Since 2020, when Wilson exploded to become the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the lowest passed output for a BYU starting quarterback is Hall’s 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2021.
With Slovis only one year of eligibility remaining, he emphasized his fitness and discipline in his search for his final collegiate home.
Last year in Pittsburgh, he had the worst statistical year of his career. He completed only 58.4% of his passes and threw 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions, as well as a transfer Jordan Addison To USC in late spring reduced Pitt’s aeronautical ambitions.
