Slay the Spire 2 has been officially announced, and it won't be in Unity

Mega Crit has announced Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the hugely popular indie game that helped inspire an entire generation of digital deck designers.

Revealed during the Triple-I Expo on Wednesday, Slay the Spire 2 was shown off in a short trailer that seemed to confirm the return of the Ironclad and Silent classes while introducing a brand new character – The Necrobinder. The official description for the new character reads: “A wandering woman seeks to bind a forgotten corpse. She summons her trusty left hand, Osti, into combat.”

In addition to the trailer, Mega Crit included several gameplay screens, which are stylistically very similar to the previous game. Check them out below.

First released in 2019, Slay the Spire has gained a huge fanbase thanks to its innovative mix of roguelite mechanics, turn-based combat, and card building. In our original review we wrote, “[Slay the Spire] It encourages experimentation, gives you time to make mistakes, and will greatly challenge you as you navigate your way through floor after floor of entertaining puzzle-like battles. It's an idea so good that it inspired dozens of games like it before it even left early access, but it was so well executed that none of them even come close to matching it.

Notably, Mega Crit was one of the developers who explicitly condemned Unity's short-lived installation fee policy, threatening to move to a new engine unless Unity's changes were “fully reverted.” A Mega Crit representative confirmed that Slay the Spire 2 has since been fully migrated from Unity and will instead use Godot – a free and open source cross-platform engine.

Slay the Spire 2 will enter early access sometime in 2025. You can find all the major games' 2024 release dates here.
