NEW YORK — Over the years, Adley Rochman and his father, Randy, have discussed the possibility of joining the Home Run Derby team one day. If Rutschman eventually gets a chance to participate in a marquee event, he will call his father to invite him to serve as a pitcher.

The call was made once the 25-year-old Orioles catcher accepted an invitation to participate in the 2023 T-Mobile Home Run Derby (July 10 on ESPN, 8 p.m. ET), which he announced on his Instagram Monday afternoon.

“The easiest decision,” said Rochman of including his father on his Derby debut. “It’s one of those things you have to do.”

Another reason it will be special is because it will be a kind of homecoming for Rutschman and his family, many of whom are expected to drive nearly three hours north for the All-Star Week festivities at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Born in Portland, Oregon, Roachman attended Sherwood High School and went to Oregon State University in Corvallis.

The first MLB game Rutschman attended as a kid was at T-Mobile Park. Now, he’ll step onto the field there as a Home Run Derby participant and as a first-time All-Star at the Midsummer Classic on July 11.

“It means a lot. I know a lot of people there,” Rochman said. “I know my dad is really excited. I know there’s going to be a lot going on, a lot in the schedule, but it’s going to be fun to be a part of.”

Pete Alonso, Mets (Who won in both 2019 and 21)
Randy Arosarina, Ray
Mookie Betts, Dodgers
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Blue Jays
Julio Rodriguez, Mariners
Adley Rochman, Orioles

Roachman will be the first player from Baltimore to compete in a derby since 2021, when Trey Mancini finished runner-up to Alonso. Two Oriole hitters won the event – Cal Ripken Jr. (1991) and Miguel Tejada (2004). Rutschman would also attempt to become the first catcher to win the star-studded event.

“So cool that he’s going to get that experience,” said manager Brandon Hyde. “It’s always fun to watch someone you know really well. And that’s a lot of pressure, too. Everyone pulls it off.”

As a switch hitter, Rutschman has the option of hitting from either the left or right side of the plate in the Home Run Derby. On Monday, he was still unsure of his strategy, though he noted that he “would probably start left-handed.”

Roachman is one of four Baltimore players named to the MLS All-Star Game, where he will be joined by reliever Felix Bautista, reliever Yenir Cano and outfielder Austin Hayes. So Rutschman will have plenty of fielding support when he tries to hit balls against the wall in the derby.

Hyde seemed to think Roachman had a strong chance of becoming Derby Champion.

“It wouldn’t surprise me, results-wise, if he did an offer,” Hyde said.

For Rutschman, though, it’s just a great opportunity to take at least one round of swing against his dad—much like the batting practice they keep participating in together over the holiday period—and soak in the special atmosphere.

“It’s just one of those things you dream about as a kid,” said Rochman. “Being able to do that with my dad is amazing.”
