The No. 4 prospect becomes the youngest player to start for Atlanta since 2011

4:10 a.m. UTC

ATLANTA — Jason Schover and his wife, Lori, had to eat the non-refundable plane tickets they purchased before their son soared faster than expected from High-A Rome to Double-A Mississippi.

A month later, they confidently book more flights, knowing their travel plans can’t be affected by another upgrade. Their son, AJ Smith-Shawver, made it to the Majors earlier than expected, and it looks like he might be around for a while.

“We all knew he was going to get here, man, but not so fast,” Schover said after seeing his son make his first career start in the Braves’ 3-2 win over the Nationals Friday night at Truist Park.

It’s only been two years since Smith Schover graduated from Colleyville (Texas) High School, and only three years have passed since he started pitching on a regular basis. His minor league career consisted of just 28 starts and 110 starts. But the 20-year-old pitcher showed nothing but poise while allowing only two unearned runs over 5 1/3 innings pitched.

His effort, along with an eighth-place finish in two runs, helped the Braves to their sixth straight win.

“I don’t think the feeling I had was relatively normal anywhere I pitched in the Minors,” Smith-Shawver, the Braves’ fourth prospect, told every MLB pipeline. “I think I started to settle down during the second half.”

“He has to be more accurate, be more consistent in the area and hit his secondary pitches better, as many other youngsters do,” Braves manager Brian Snicker said. “He learns on the job here.”

Smith-Shoefer pitched in front of a sold-out crowd of 40,297 and walked out to a standing ovation. The environment was a little different than the one that surrounded him on April 16, when he performed in front of 1,605 fans during his season debut with High-A Rome.

“I just tried to look at it like, ‘It’s just a great night and I can do that every day,'” Smith Schover said. “I tried to satiate everything, look around and say, ‘Wow, here we are.’

Three starts for Roma were followed by two at Double-A and two more at Triple-A. He struck out 35.2 percent of the batters he faced during that six-week period, and now finds himself in major league rotation just three years after COVID-19 affected his decision. Start playing again.

“It’s hard to believe,” said Murphy.

This was a festive night for a family who really knows how fast this can happen. Just two years ago, Lori Schover was watching her son graduate high school and pondering whether to play professional baseball or try out for quarterback at Texas Tech.

“I’m so proud of him, I’m going to cry,” Lowry said about 30 minutes before Friday’s first game.

Jason Schover has been living the life of AJ since he was an infant. The Braves pitcher added his stepfather’s surname to Smith during his high school years. After seeing him throw a football 85 yards away, Jason knew his son had a special arm. But when it looked like soccer might be the future, and a growth plate created some discomfort in the right shoulder during his first two years of high school, the decision was made to stop playing.

But once a number of football camps were canceled due to COVID in 2020, Smith-Shawver decided to spend time with his friends on a traveling baseball team. He was one of the best third-place prospects in the state of Texas. But he became a coveted prospect when he went up a hill in Oklahoma and was instantly clocked at 93 mph.

“He was like, ‘Once I do the show, they won’t let me hit,'” Jason Smith Schover said. “But then he realized he could play and he’d played a lot of golf.”

Three years later, the Shawvers are the proud parents of the Major Leaguer, who now has a wide range of golf options.

“It’s great to see their faces light up,” said Smith Schaufer. “They almost seem to enjoy it as much or even more than I do.”
