John Travolta’s iconic white suit, which he wore in the hit movie Saturday Night Fever, has sold for 209,000 pounds ($260,000).
The actor, 69, famously donned the three-piece suit with flared pants when he took to the dance floor in the 1977 classic.
His character, Tony Manero, teams up with Stephanie Mangano to dance to the Bee Gees song “More Than a Woman” in a disco dance competition.
Contrary to popular belief, the actor wasn’t wearing the suit when he broke out in his now-legendary dance solo to “Night Fever” in the same movie.
Despite wearing most of the film’s promotional photos, including the posters, video cover, and soundtrack LP.
The suit and his dance moves have been replicated by millions of people around the world over the past 46 years at everything from fancy dress parties to nightclub themed nights.
The now-sold suit was one of three suits purchased from the men’s costume store, Leading Mill, in Brooklyn, New York, by the film’s costume director.
Two of them were worn on the Travolta set and both have had the embroidered store label on the inside of the jacket removed so they are not visible on screen.
The third jumpsuit was used for a promotional photo shoot.
The suit was given as a birthday gift from Don Williams, then-president of Paramount Pictures, to close friend Brian Wasserman in 1981.
Mr. Wasserman sold it to U.S. Attorney Brad Teplitsky last year and arranged for a visit by Travolta, who confirmed it was the same one he wore 45 years ago.
Sold by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles. He was given a pre-sale estimate of £150,000 but ended up selling for that amount.
A spokesperson for Julien said: ‘This suit is considered one of the most iconic costumes in cinema history.
It is one of only two known to have been used during production. It has never been offered or sold at auction before.
“It has become a symbol not only of the movie but of the entire disco era.”
The single-breasted jacket, waistcoat and pants are made of 100% polyester. In keeping with the fashion of the time, she has exaggerated lapels and wide trousers.
In the movie when Tony is riding on the subway, he flips his lapels and collar.
