Why the Warriors’ promotion of Mike Donlevy Jr. makes sense

Adrian Wojnarowski breaks Warriors’ decision to promote Mike Dunleavy Jr. To be the next general manager.

Golden State Warriors CEO Mike Dunleavy Jr. has agreed a deal to become the franchise’s new general manager, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Dunleavy, 42, has risen from vice president of basketball operations and will replace former president and general manager Bob Myers, who recently resigned after 11 seasons and four championships.

Dunleavy’s representatives at Excel Sports Management ended talks about a new, long-term deal with owner Joe Lacob on Thursday, sources said. An official announcement is scheduled for Friday morning, with a press conference scheduled for Monday.

Dunleavy will join Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Kirk Lakob in the team’s larger decision-making roles. After finishing third in 2002 and spending over four seasons with the Warriors, Dunlevy played 15 seasons in the NBA before retiring. Hired as a scout by Myers in 2018, his rise in the Golden State front office has been rapid.

The Warriors are approaching an important crossroads for the franchise that includes Draymond Green’s $27.6 million player option for next season and discussions about a possible extension as well as plans for Klay Thompson when he enters the final year of his contract. The team faces a potential payroll bill, a fancy $500 million tax bill, and looming changes to the collective bargaining agreement that will penalize high-spending teams like the Warriors.

Golden State lost in the semifinals of the Western Conference tournament to the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

Dunleavy is the son of longtime NBA player, coach and manager Mike Dunleavy Sr. and won a national championship with Duke in 2001.
